Tip-sy Tuesday
I thought I started this one earlier, but here goes:
Non-gardening tips (we already have a thread for garden-related ones). One per person per Tuesday.
Here's mine: Old pantyhose can be used for more than just twist-ties. Filled with magnesium chloride and tied off at the "thigh", laid in the gutter over the area where the downspout starts, can help prevent ice dams. You will have to check it periodically throughout winter (nice day and be careful, please) to see if it's depleted. Runners in 'hose are OK, but not holes--kinda defeats the system.

Versatile Synthetic Fiber . . .
Hey, that's pretty crafty, WD.
I was surprised, but then again I wasn't that our local hardware store sold panty hose and knee highs. Yours is just one more use for this versatile apparel, and a good one at that.
(When I first saw your post titled "Tip-sy Tuesday", I thought you were telling us that it was 'HAPPY HOUR' ~ you got my immediate attention, WD )

That's funny, Sandy.
The last pair of panty hose I saw was for sale at our local hardware store, along with some small boxes of 'knee highs'. Could it be that panty hose have fallen out of fashion ? I think there is a book out on the practical uses of panty hose. . . . emergency fan belt replacement, paint strainers, lint catchers on washing machine discharge hoses . . . . . on and on.

Thanks Harv--I figured that would get someone's attention. Yes, p.h. have fallen out of fashion--if one is a night owl and catches the talk shows late at night, notice that the ladies who wear dresses are bare-legged and oiled up or something--very shiny skin. Maybe the spray tans come in semi-gloss like paint...
As for a substitute for p.h., I don't know. It would have to be porous enough to let the magnesium or calcium chloride/water run through, but not porous enough to lose the material within. Maybe cheesecloth?
