Looking for a certain white iris
Hi! New to this site, have been a flower shrub and tree gardener (rather than veggies) for most of my adult life! Am logging in to see if any of you Iris lovers might know of a variety advertised last fall as White Crane, supposedly giant, all white, bearded iris? A dear, dear friend of mine mentioned it to me and I would love to find the grower in time to purchase a plant for her before her 88th birthday this May. Any body heard of such an iris? Can't find it in the registered pages of the Iris Society, so ... maybe a new catalogue? Just checking around to see who might help me pick up the trail and track this beauty down! Another delight would be to find an Iris hybridizer with an Iris matching the description (white, huge) that would actually sell it this time of year!!! Much obliged and happy 2009 gardening to you all! - scaper

Welcome to MGC, scaper! You might want to give a call to The Iris Farm in Traverse City. They would know about this bearded iris if anybody does. Good luck with your search!

Thank you so much for the welcome and the tip! That phone number gives me a msg that the line is disconnected and directory assist does not seem to have another #; Iris Farm is listed as a landscaper on-line also so I will try the various Michigan Association landscaper groups for someone who might have an e-mail. Otherwise, I'll post a snail mail tomorrow morning. Thanks again! I try to buy Michigan whenever possible.

You're right. The number is no longer in service. I just tried it myself. They don't seem to have a website either. I do know they preferred people to come and look rather than browse online for info. I hope you have better luck w/the snail mail. William Alpers is the owner of the farm. you might try looking up his number.
Note: I found Rainbow Iris Farms online: http://www.rainbowfarms.net/
It's based in Iowa. Notice you can browse by color. I found a few all white bearded irises but no White Crane. This one looked the best to me: http://www.rainbowfarms.net/8305.html

Iris search
Glad to have you join us, scaper
A michigan grower you may want to contact is Hallson nursery in Brooklyn. I don't have a link for you, you'll have to google the name. The owner, Chris, is a top-notch garden person. He sells some perennials but his speciality is hostas. He is good at returning calls. His forum also has an iris forum, but since time is of the essence contact him directly. If he doesn't have what you are looking for he may have a MI lead for you. Good luck in your search!
This nursery is worth a day trip to visit. Has a hill side of hostas.

Great tip sweetpea, I sent an e-mail this afternoon and am hoping they will respond soon. I too the liberty of mentioning this forum as a referral to prompt my contact to them. Had no prior knowledge of this grower and so am getting exactly what I hoped for from this site's membership knowledge; in fact, more than I hoped. I will report back when I hear something and many thanks! - scaper

Scaper - The Mio Irisarians could be a good source in locating the iris you are searching for. This link is under the web-lins header at the top left of this sites homepage. Lots of good iris info from MI gardeners. Several photos belong to a grower in Maple City.

very good!
I checked out the website I didn't find the Iris I was looking for yet but your clue helped to realize that the Iris I am looking for is an 'ensata' and armed with that clue, doing another web search, I have actually run across a pic of the (I had the name wrong!!) Iris Great White Heron (Not Crane but Heron) on Dave's Garden web site. I have contacted the person who put up a picture on the website and am waiting for a response. In th meantime, the owners of Ensata Gardens here in Michigan have contacted me and confirmed that the Iris I seek is I. ensata Great White Heron and also have given me horticultural info for growing here in SE Mi. Ensata garden has the plant but is repleninshing their stock this year, so, not available, but oh, so close! I have made great strides toward the goal and thank everyone for their great tips! -Scaper
